What Mindfulness Really Means (And What It Doesn’t) Let’s get one thing out of the way: Mindfulness is not about being calm all the time. If you’re anything like me, you might’ve pictured some serene person meditating in perfect silence, no phone buzzing, no emails piling up, just inner peace all day long. Yeah. No. That’s not what mindfulness is about—especially not when you’re burnt out, overwhelmed, or just plain tired of trying to keep it all together. So what is mindfulness? For me, it’s this: Mindfulness is noticing what’s happening inside and around you, without trying to fix it right away. It’s that pause between the 47th notification and your 5th cup of coffee, where you suddenly realize—“Whoa. I haven’t taken a deep breath all day.” It’s checking in with yourself like you would with a friend: “Hey. How are you doing? No, like… really?” That’s it. It’s not fancy. It’s not a cure.
